Heritage and culture

The little villages on the edges of the Thau Lagoon and in the garrigue have kept their authenticity, with their typically Mediterranean narrow streets brimming with flowers.

They are full of hidden treasures, the heritage from their past, with ancient ramparts, Roman chapels, churches, castles with ornately decorated façades and archeological sites. The wine-growers’ houses are a testament to the importance of our region’s wine-growing business to the local economy and prosperity in the 19st century.

Museums retrace the vestiges of Gallo-Roman history (Loupian) and oyster farming (Bouzigues).

The garrigue countryside, too, is home to curious historical features, like the “capitelles”, drystone huts on the waymarked hiking trails crossing the countryside, and the ancient milestones on the Via Domitia, the Roman road passing through the villages of Montbazin and Loupian.

All year round, especially in the summer, our villages come alive with concerts, musical festivals and art exhibitions for everyone to enjoy.
